Fred White, Flintham’s shopkeeper 1911 – 1949, was a keen photographer. From the late 1800s until 1915, when his camera blew over and was damaged, he took photographs of his friends, relatives and colleagues, their activities and their houses. Fred was unable to have his camera repaired in 1915 because the manufacturer said he was too busy helping the war effort. By the time the war ended in 1918 Fred was preoccupied with running his shop and many of Flintham’s organisations, so the camera was never mended. It was packed away, along with c. 600 glass plate negatives; these were discovered in 1990 and all of them were printed.
